Perspective
I am a baseball fan. I love when certain former players transition into broadcasting and commentate on the games. They have the perspective. They understand the pressures and the challenges. If they are eloquent and don’t spend the airtime discussing their former glories, then as far as I’m concerned, they are exactly what the game needs.
I enjoy the Gary Cohen and Ron Darling match-up on Sports Net New York. Gary Cohen is an extremely accomplished play-by-play guy. He is professional and sometimes awfully brilliant. Ron Darling is an intellectual with athletic prowess and is the first New York Met to receive a Gold Glove Award. He is total class and very insightful. After many years on the mound he brings street smarts to his intellectual game analysis.
During one broadcast Darling turned to Cohen and sincerely told him how blown away he was by Cohen’s abilities to call the game despite the pressure and the speed. Darling confessed that he could never do what Cohen does as well as Cohen does. Cohen was completely flabbergasted by the compliment. He was incredulous that this extraordinary former pitcher thought he had something going on. It was such a genuine moment. Cohen couldn’t believe that Ron Darling would admire something that Gary Cohen probably took for granted as a routine skill.
Their exchange made me take pause. I am a small business owner with worth. I envy the talents of others at times, but so know what I have going on and that when I combine forces with other small business owners, we are indomitable.
I am still half listening to Gary and Ron as I am typing this and there is no denying their expertise. Although I am rhapsodizing about a sports broadcast, a symphony truly resonates when you sing your stuff loud and proud. It doesn’t hurt to praise someone you admire either! You gotta play ball.

I have to say that I too have moments like that! Times when I think that the people around me (like the wonderful Mary Dado) are just brilliant and that I am so fortunate to have incredible people to hang out with!
